Notes

At the moment of his death, Toqueville's "library included the classics of the seventeenth century, Chateaubriand being an exception because of family ties…; with the exception of the Encyclopedists, who may have disappeared from the library, after Alexis's time, the great philosophies of the eighteenth century are here: Voltaire, Montesquieu, Buffon, Rousseau, Mably, and Raynall…" (Jardin, p. 62) . We assume that Alexis de Tocqueville actually read these authors fairly closely.
