"Part of [the old Victorian] Christmas-time traditions was the pantomime, with its opening in the cave of gloom, and its fairy-tale characters. A Christmas Carol alludes directly to this tradition with the introduction of Ali Baba, Aladdin, Valentine and Orson, and even Robinson Crusoe and Friday. The first pair are as much derived from Dickens's childhood reading of The Arabian Nights."
