Read while an undergraduate student at the University of Manitoba, out of personal interest. McLuhan once wrote that "I have to read outside the course to maintain interest". According to Gordon, "Thomas Carlyle was an early favorite, because of his bold, innovative language. His gauge of self-worth came from reading Carlyle's biography: the exercise made him feel hopeless and incompetent…" (Gordon, p. 16)
