Nelson's "letters show that he was familiar with the Bible and Shakespeare, as a man of his time and background was expected to be; but there seems to be no record of his having read for pleasure anything else, other than accounts of sea voyages [and, also, books on military strategy] " (Hibbert, p. 207)
